Nine Mile Ranch is located nine miles northwest of Quesnel, British Columbia. Our land, on Blackwater Rd, was a stopping place for years as the freight wagons passed by on the only route between Quesnel, Prince George and Vanderhoof. Travelers flowed through the ranch, as the road passed between the house and the barns.
It was purchased by the Sanford’s in the early 1920’s. The landmark hip-roof barn was built in the 1930’s as a place to house dairy cattle and has served through the generations. The ranch occupies most of the valley and the center of the operation is now located west on Sanford Rd. Our children and grandchildren are the fifth and six generation to grow up at Nine Mile.
We purchased the ranch in 1986 from Alan’s parents. Through the years beef cattle have replaced the dairy and the original Hereford herd has developed into mainly Angus and Simmental cattle. The commercial cattle have been our livelihood and for that reason we have developed a very productive set of females. We have been raising cattle for more than 30 years. In 2001, we purchased a set of Red Angus females from Leachman Cattle Co. out of Montana. These females became the foundation of our now 80 head purebred Angus herd. They run alongside our commercial cows and are expected to perform under the same working conditions and thrive in BC’s bush range. Every year we market our bulls at sales around BC and have sold privately out of our pen throughout the winter months.
Beef Cattle have become not only our passion but our way of life. We value locally grown produce and so in recent years have taken great pride in producing quality beef for sale at our local community store Rocky’s.
